The sun has been in and out this autumn but we were lucky to have a particularly gorgeous day last week. Three other pleasant surprises peppered our day…
We had to stop and buy rice on the way up to the farm, so we waited until we were in the local village to buy from the “conbini” (read tobacco and alcohol) shop owner. While Chuck was doing business over ごはん、we got to give some love to the shop owner’s precious pup, Maru chan.
2. MIDORI FARM AUTHENTIC WEAR
At lunch time Chuck made a friend and together they designed Midori Farm’s new authentic wear!
3. THE RAISED BEDS
The best news was that we are ahead of schedule building our new raised bed. Big thanks to all our hardworking volunteers! Dan from Scotland joined us for a week and really helped us put them together. Him, Pauline and other volunteers from Kyoto were able to get them done a lot quicker than we expected!
For many reasons, we also love upcycling or repurposing. So all of the wood framing for the beds is made from old pallets, lovingly broken apart by various volunteers. And what’s the big deal about raised beds anyways? With raised beds we get a whole other growing season! In late March, when the snow is still melting, the ground is still frozen so it’s not possible to plant veggies yet.
Buuuut, in the raised beds, the earth is not frozen so we can plant our veggies way earlier.
So, raised beds = more veg = :)
Come out to Yokai Soho’s collective market this Saturday to get some veg yourself and also to see what amazing things you can do with our veg- try our Midori Farm curry and Vegginy vegan tacos made with our butternuts!
